Seafront News
Summer 2007

Day of Action: 1 September 2007

As agreed at our Annual General Meeting, we have pursued a number of issues with Tendring District Council and with our M.P. The state of the beaches in sections D & E being at the top of our list.

It now seems likely that the work on the sea defences and restoring the beaches, which has already been put back, will now be put back again.

As a committee we can pursue our case with the Council through letters and meetings but it would enormously strengthen our case if we could show just how much the members were behind us. To this end, we are organising a Day of Action on 1 September and we would like to get as many beach hut owners along as possible. We shall be contacting local radio and television as well to help make our point public.

With the big rent rises we have had to put up with recently, it’s time we saw some return for our money! Please come along and lend your support. 2:00 p.m. 1 September Section D, below York Road, Holland-on-Sea.

Sea Defence Work on B&C Sections
By the time you read this Newsletter the sea defence work in Sections B & C should have been completed. The work, which was originally planned to end in May, finally ended in August, meaning that beach hut owners in those two sections have not been able to use their beach huts to full capacity for most of the summer.
In an email to the Chairman, Councillor David Lines, Leader of TDC, said, “A refund is due to those owners who use of their huts has been abbreviated by the works – this will err on the side of ‘generous.’”
It remains to be seen how generous!

Vandalism, Arson and Security
As most of you will know there has been a spate of vandalism and arson recently, not just in Holland, but also all along the Tendring coast, with beach hut owners in Dovercourt, Walton and Frinton also suffering badly.
The police say they have stepped up their own patrols and have employed plain clothes officers and a number of youths have been arrested in connection with the offences.
We also employ our own Security firm to patrol the beach huts and to report any damage.
If you see any acting suspiciously telephone the police immediately and if you see any damage contact our Damage Control Officer, Susan Ashman, on 07946561189.

The Committee
At the Annual General Meeting, the following members were elected to the Committee:

Chariman: Norman Jacobs
Secretary: Teresa Dale
Treasurer: Doris Bailey
Damage Control Officer: Susan Ashman
Committee Members: Corinne Simons and Brian Merry
The committee would like to point out that they all act in a purely voluntary capacity from their homes. There is no Clacton & Holland Beach Hut Association office and there are no full time workers.
When you telephone any of the committee and they are not available for any reason, please leave your name and telephone number and they will get back to you.
Sadly, there have been occasions over the last year or so, when family members of the above answering the phone have been subjected to verbal abuse because the committee member is out and the person answering the phone is unable to answer the question.
The committee members’ families are not responsible for the Beach Hut committee and can do without it! Please treat them with respect.

End of Season Meeting

Our annual end of season meeting will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday 20 October at the Holland Public Hall.

There has been plenty going on since the A.G.M. Come along and hear what’s been happening and have your say.

Annual General Meeting
On the front of the Newsletter you will see the agenda for the 2008 A.G.M. Please make every effort to come along to the meeting as this is your chance to have your say in the running of the Association.
Please also consider the possibility of helping to run the Association. We are now down to just five committee members following the resignation of the secretary, Teresa Dale, and there is a lot of work for just five people to do in trying to look after the interests of the 200+ Association members. The more members who can help out the less there is for each of them to do!
We have also invited representatives of Tendring District Council and Tower Security to come to the AGM, so they can tell you what is happening and give you the chance to question them.
Sea Defences
The state of the beaches and of the sea defences in Holland still give cause for grave concern and we are continuing to push the Council in to getting defra to stump up the money to carry out the full scheme.
The Holland Residents Association are also actively pursuing the matter and we hope to link up with them to jointly pursue the matter.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously telephone the police immediately and if you see any damage contact our Damage Control Officer, Susan Ashman, on 07946561189.

Car Parking
As you will know by now that, following lobbying by the Association, the Council have agreed to give Beach Hut owners who are residents of Tendring annual parking permits for just £5. Although the original plan was to give out these permits just for the Hazlemere Road, York Road and Brighton Road, the form that was sent out was not very well worded and made no mention of the restriction to these three car parks. Because of this we have taken up the case of those members who have beach huts in Clacton and asked for permits for the Martello Bay car park. As a result of our pressure, TDC have now agreed to grant the permits for Martello Bay as well.
Unfortunately, it still remains the case, that in spite of continued lobbying from both us as an individual association and as part of the consortium of beach hut associations in Tendring, the Council will not agree to non-Tendring residents having the same concession.
We are continuing to press the case for our “out-of-town” members.

Subs were due on 1 January. Most members have renewed but if you have overlooked it please send £20 to Doris Bailey, 81 York Road, Holland-on-Sea, CO15 5NW, together with your name and beach hut number as soon as possible. Thank you!
